ORYX

Tiziana Pintus violin - Monique Bartels cello - Annelie de Man harpsichord

The inspiration for the name of this group came from the brilliant novel by Margaret Atwood ‘Oryx and Crake’, which depicts a world partly well known, partly changed and sometimes dangerously altered by our own quest for the unknown.

Their first program, Close Encounters, will contrast masterworks from the Baroque era with contemporary works. Traditionally, with this combination of instruments, the violin presents the melody line with the cello and harpsichord adopting a secondary role as the bass and rhythm section.

The Trio has asked a number of composer’s to write new works challenging this traditional notion by liberating the cello and harpsichord to equal roles. So far the composers Jacob ter Veldhuis, Roderik de Man, Martijn Voorvelt and Matthias Konecny have committed to this challenge writing pieces that have received commissions from the Dutch Foundation for the Arts.

A CD that includes two world premieres for this trio (ter Veldhuis en de Man) has been released on September 5th during the International Gaudeamus Music Week. The CD is the tenth instalment of the series “Ladder of Escape” released by Attacca, in collaboration with DLF/Deutschland Radio.

The trio has present its debut concert in Utrecht, during the “Summer Festival”, on August 28th 2008 in the Lutherse Kerk and has since then played, among others, in Eindhoven - de Witte Dame, Nijmegen - Gallerie Marzee, Utrecht - Vredenburg.
